In January 2014 a brutal new jihadist group swept through Syria and set up its capital in Raqqa in the east of the country. In the two years since, so-called Islamic State has evolved into the most notorious extremist group in the world. For the past three months Today programme correspondent Mike Thomson has been in sporadic contact with an activist based in Raqqa from a group called Al-Sharqiya 24. He has been keeping a diary of what life is like under Islamic State. We have changed some details of his story, read by an actor, to protect his identity.

The programme also follows Mr Chung, a former inmate of a political prison camp who escaped to the West, as he smuggles USB sticks and DVDs of South Korean soap operas and entertainment shows into the North, posing as a mushroom farmer. There are the first stirrings of open dissent: a woman running a bus service on the back of a lorry refuses to bribe a soldier, and more ominously for Kim Jong Un, there are mutterings of discontent and disrespect from an official commandeered to build a special railway to the supreme leader's birthplace. channel4

A television actor drinks too much and gets blackballed from the industry, and then he decides to break back in by directing his own movie. Eventually, he gets sober, and then falls off the wagon and goes crazy and turns his film into a musical.

Materials are gathered. What are the various branches, stones and pieces of grass for and what will the silent activities lead to? INSIDE slowly uncovers an act of human solidarity. The camera hovers around two boys, ramping up the tension, and is supported by an excellent soundtrack.

Christina is trapped in a room with only a Toshiba laptop and an untraceable Internet connection. Unable to determine where she is being held or what her fate might be, she uses the laptop to mobilize her social network, reaching out to friends, family and anyone else who can help her figure out where she’s being held and how to escape.
